ONGC to start oil exploration in UP and Bihar's Ganga river basin

The oil fields are majorly categorized to onshore and offshore fields majorly found in sedimentary and continental shelves. India having 1 lakh sq. km area of sedimentary onshore and 2 lakh sq km offshore continental shelf comprising of total 27 basins , recently Andhra Pradesh's KG basin was in news for the extraction of mineral oil.

Current mineral oil fields in India are Brahmaputra valley of northeast India, Barmer area of Rajasthan, Gujarat coast in western India, Cauvery on-shore basin in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh offshore and onshore oil reserves are the major contributor towards the domestic oil production but ONGC announce to explore the Ganga River Basin for the possible oil field and boost the oil production of India.
Two years ago surveys were performed in Samastipur and Baxar districts of Bihar for the possible reserves of oil and now after collecting seismic data for two years over an area of 300 sq km area ONGC is ready to drill two oil wells this year for oil and gas in Samastipur, Bihar. This will include Bihar as oil producing state and opening up whole Ganga river basin for oil exploration including the regions of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The first drilling will cost INR 30-35 Crores as per the director of ONGC Shushma Rawat.
Exploratory drilling was last undertaken in Bihar about half a centaury ago but due to lack of enough seismic data the wells were not found but now with more seismic data available with current technology possibilities of oil wells can be more accurate. If a commercial discovery is made, it will transform the energy requirement scenario of the countries as India import major chunk of it's oil consumption from other countries taking a hit on it's forex reserve.

This discovery may also lead to development of local industries around the oil and gas production area. ONGC has also planned to explore the Balia district but currently facing issues in acquiring the land due to small individual ownership of land. Both the round of blocks were acquired by ONGC under the fourth Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) a few years ago.
